Cathays, Cardiff: Mobile DPF Cleaning
On-site DPF cleaning goes to the motor. Your motor isn't taken away and the filter will not come off. A technician comes at your place over in Cathays, clears the diesel particulate filter fitted to the vehicle and carries out a DPF regeneration.
You'll have a number by phone before anyone departs, the clean beginning from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
The light is already on and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we usually find people, and what this page is about.
What to do when the DPF light shows
First thing: it is not necessarily the unit. A check goes before all treatment, because that same dashboard light has several candidate faults behind it.
How the car is run in the meantime counts too.
- Motor still driving fine on an amber light — attempt a long steady run first. It costs zero and frequently shifts the filter without assistance.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has shut.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under the throttle — stop booking long drives and get it checked.
Before the light, what the car was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been growing for weeks:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they once went
- fuel consumption going worse
- silently, the stop/start bows out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. With the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.
What blocks diesel particulate filters around Cathays
Being a residential suburb, Cathays throws up precisely the use a DPF copes with worst. The school run to the local primary school, May Street at a halt at half past eight, a few minutes to Lidl, the dash to the nearest station — nothing of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. What should burn off stays behind.
The M4 stands under 5 miles from Cathays, Cardiff under 3 miles off, and unless something pulls you out that way regularly, full weeks slip past without the long unbroken run that clears a filter. Geography does not oblige.
DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode stops it
What limp mode amounts to is the car protecting itself. The real difficulty is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is held down.
The standard advice — get it up the motorway — is sensible, until it is not. The filter needs treatment rather than road work once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.
DPF cleaning at the vehicle round Cathays
Most drivers do not expect this part: the filter stays put. The job takes place with the DPF even now fitted to the vehicle — on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can sit for a couple of hours.
A scan happens first — live data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by actual weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and connected hardware, so other faults are cleared before a thing is cleaned.
Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never budge are freed second, by a cleaning fluid fed through the access port on that motor, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to require doing twice.
A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has loosened. Ride along with the car and it is done as a monitored drive out of Cathays. Drop it and the regeneration is done in place, with real-time data verified once it is done.
Both sets of figures go over by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second scan is what confirms the change, clears the light and notes whatever is still open.
Where a clean is not the answer
Treatment answers one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does little for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a restriction that is not there
- EGR valves that stick open
- AdBlue system problems
- a regeneration that simply never completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
- oil working through the filter from a faulty turbo
The first check is there for precisely that. Turning out to be one of them means finding out it before the work gets going, not after paying a penny.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets typed in as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your own filter is treated in place and goes back into use.
Costs for DPF cleaning around Cathays
Any visit takes a call-out charge — getting to you, setting up the booking, doing the check and giving the advice. The clean itself opens from £299.
No flat rate would be straight, so the figure is fixed over the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. Where you are tells as much as what you run: Cathays itself, Maindy nearby, or otherwise out across the CF postcode area.
Where the check says cleaning will not work, you are not charged for a clean. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone travelled, carried out the scan and offered you the advice.
A 30-day warranty includes aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Cathays if the light comes back inside the window.
Astonished with attention to detail and information given by Jason M. Prompt and efficient work carried out in a timely manner. Many thanks.
Dan and trainee Sam came along sorted out the car, got it from trapped on the drive to back on the road in under 1hr and 30 mins. Also highlighted some issues that needed fixing unrelated to the initial problem and gave some after care advice!
Professional, friendly and fast service. Daz done really good job. My car is now running smoothly and all power back with DPF cleaned and all faults erased. Thank you!
What we clean, and how far we reach around Cathays
Whatever it is — estate, van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the same call-out service stands, and the filter never leaves it.
Cathays is seldom a special trip: technicians are out on May Street nearly every week, and the same run covers Maindy, Pen-y-lan and the villages out past Llanedeyrn Village. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so further out through Cardiff is even so worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

Things Cathays drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough on its own?
- Soon enough, and with the vehicle out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That requires motorway speed for a sustained stretch, rather than a short trip to Lidl.
- About how long does it take?
- Plan on typically around 2 hours — badly clogged filters sometimes take a second pass, which adds to it.
- The cost in Cathays — what is it?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for coming out that covers the check and advice on what to do next. The vehicle and your address both move the number, so we quote on the phone.
- Do I have to be around?
- A spot for the car to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be run as a watched drive instead.
- Getting to Cathays — how soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the diary. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is open across the CF area.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- Treated where it sits, on this service, so no. Neither getting a filter off nor putting one back on is work we do.
- Suppose the light returns?
- Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Cathays.
