Mobile DPF Cleaning around Castlerigg, Cumbria
With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the vehicle. A fitter comes at your address across Castlerigg, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the vehicle, runs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you came with.
Nobody leaves until the price is fixed by the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean opens from £299.
The light is on already and the motor is low on power — that is how we normally meet people, and what this page deals with.
Your DPF light is showing — what now?
First thing: it is not always the filter. Treatment is not where a visit starts. A scan is — a number of faults appear as the same warning.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then makes a difference.
- Amber light, vehicle yet driving normally — a long constant run can even now clear it on its own. Costs nothing, and worth attempting before you ring anything.
- Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not shift it. The window has gone.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the car, or smoke on the throttle, has gone well past the long-run stage.
The car has been telling you already
Symptoms have usually been building for a while before the light even shows. Last news, in other words:
- power tailing off, particularly climbing uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they always did
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. The light beside them points at a blocked filter.
Clogged diesel particulate filters near Castlerigg, and the cause
For a DPF, the least kind driving is the sort you find in a rural hamlet such as Castlerigg. Look at an ordinary week: St Herbert's CofE (VA) Primary and Nursery School and back, A591 at a crawl before nine, a quick trip to Lakes & Dales Co-operative, a dash to the nearest station. Not much there runs long enough or gets hot enough to finish a regeneration. What should burn away remains.
The map does not help either. The M6 is under 15 miles from Castlerigg and Carlisle is under 25 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way often, entire weeks go by without the long unbroken run that might empty the filter on its own.
DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode kills it
It is self-defence: that is all limp mode means. Power is capped, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter requires can no longer complete — which is the real difficulty, because a long drive works by starting that regeneration.
The standard advice — run it up the motorway — is sound, right until it is not. The filter requires cleaning rather than driving once the car has slipped into limp mode.
Call-out DPF cleaning where the motor stands across Castlerigg
On your drive, in a work car park, wherever the motor can stand for a while: the job takes place with the filter still fitted on, which is the part most owners do not anticipate.
A check goes first — running data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by weight, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated parts, so other faults are cleared before a thing is started.
Next comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the motor's own access port, spreading inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration will not. Where the filter is severely loaded, expect a second pass.
What the clean has freed is then burned off by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of Castlerigg if you are there, or a static regeneration where the vehicle waits, with the live data checked afterwards.
Both sets of figures come through by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second diagnostic is what confirms the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still showing.
What a DPF clean will not touch
Only one fault is cured by treatment: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does no good for:
- pressure or temperature sensors showing a blockage that is not there
- the EGR valve jammed open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration running whatsoever
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
That is what the first check is for. Where one of those is the fault, you hear about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.
Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
The figure of DPF cleaning in Castlerigg
The treatment opens from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that comes with it.
The price is agreed on the phone, once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you run and where you are both move it: Castlerigg itself, over at Brigham, or further out within the CA postcode area.
You are not charged for a clean that the scan says will not help. What even so stands is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the check was done and the advice was offered.
If the light returns inside that window, an engineer heads back out to Castlerigg — the clean includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare.
Diaz did a very great job. He gave a detail explanation on what to do after his work and in fact the car is back on its normal performance. Thank you mate.

Vehicles we clean, and where we get to round Castlerigg
Whatever it is — private car, panel van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the one mobile service holds, and the filter never departs it.
Most weeks there is already someone on A591, so Castlerigg rarely means a special trip, and Brigham, Keswick and the villages past Portinscale come with it. Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out around Cumbria is still worth a phone call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Questions Castlerigg drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run shift it?
- If you catch it early enough, and the motor is not in limp mode, sometimes. A steady run at motorway speed is what it wants — not fifteen minutes flat to Lakes & Dales Co-operative and back.
- Does the visit run long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely clogged filter can take cleaning twice, which takes longer.
- In Castlerigg, what does it run to?
- The call-out charge covers the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; the clean itself begins from £299. Quoting is done by phone, since what you run and where you sit both change the price.
- Do I have to be present?
- The car requires a spot for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. Choosing to be there is fine: the regeneration then is done out on the move, monitored.
- Coming to Castlerigg — how soon?
- That depends on the schedule, but it is often same-day or next-day. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is free across the CA area.
- Is the filter lifted off the motor?
- It is cleaned where it is, on the call-out service. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
- What if the light comes back?
- The 30-day warranty includes aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Castlerigg.
