Symptoms have usually been mounting for a while before the light ever appears. Last news, in other words:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- worse fuel economy
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is evidence by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
