The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been growing for weeks:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did

- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
By itself, none of that is evidence. Next to the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
