By the time the light shows, things have generally been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- less power, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- fuel economy turning worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out

None of that is conclusive by itself. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is there too.
