Cargo, Cumbria: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Cleaning the DPF is done at the vehicle, not at a workshop. Your car will not be taken off and the filter does not leave it. A technician arrives at your address across Cargo, treats the diesel particulate filter on the vehicle and runs a DPF regeneration.
You'll know a price by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
The light is on already and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we generally meet people, and what this page is about.
Your DPF light is lit — what then?
It might not be the unit at all. That is the main thing. A check comes before all cleaning, because that same panel light has a number of candidate faults behind it.
The use you do in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.
- A long steady run may yet do it, provided the light is amber and the car goes normally. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before booking.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has shut.
- Stop arranging long drives and get it seen to if the car stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.
Signs the vehicle has been showing you
Symptoms have generally been mounting for a while before the light even appears. Late news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- fuel economy getting worse
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. Next to the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Cargo
The motoring that goes with a coastal village like Cargo is the least kind sort for a DPF. The school run to Kingmoor Junior School, Edenside at a crawl at the morning rush, a few minutes to Asda, the dash to Carlisle — nothing of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. Instead of burning off, the soot collects.
Save when you have a standing reason to head out to the M6, under 3 miles from Cargo, or over to Carlisle under 5 miles away, entire weeks go by without a long steady stint. Geography is against you.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration gives out
Limp mode is the vehicle protecting itself. A proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode prevents: power limited, revs kept low, no regeneration possible.
The common advice — get it up the motorway — is sensible, up until it is not. Past that stage — limp mode — road work will not manage it, and the filter requires a clean.
DPF cleaning at the car round Cargo
Nothing comes off the car. That surprises people. The DPF sits fitted where it is and the work is done around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, any place it can stand for a couple of hours.
The ECU is read first, showing soot load by percentage and by mass, along with a review of sensor readings, glow plugs and associated components, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.
Then the clean. A solution is fed in through the access point on that vehicle and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to take doing twice.
Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has freed. Ride along with the motor and it is done as a monitored drive out of Cargo. Leave it and the regeneration is done on the spot, with live data read once it is done.
Finally the scan runs again — the change verified, the light reset, anything still outstanding noted. Both reports arrive with you by email, so the numbers are on record.
When a DPF clean is not the fix
One thing is what treatment answers — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:
- the wrong signal from a temperature or pressure sensor
- an EGR valve jammed open
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- failed glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
- the turbo passing oil into the filter
Which is why the scan goes first. If it is found to be one of those, you are warned before any work starts rather than after you have paid for it.
Two things more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
What DPF cleaning costs in Cargo
A call-out charge applies whatever follows, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice passed on. Treatment itself opens from £299.
No single flat rate would be truthful, so the number is fixed on the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. Where you are counts as much as what you run: Cargo itself, Harker close by, or further out in the CA postcode area.
Where the diagnostic says treatment will not work, you are not charged for treatment. What even so holds is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the diagnostic was done and the advice was offered.
The clean comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to Cargo if the light reappears inside that time.
Professional service. Sorted the problem out left me a breakdown of potential problems on the vehicle so pre-emptying future issues. Thank you.
Great service, friendly technician identified issue and explained what was needed to have done, when this was done he would come back to reclean system.
Atilla went out of his way to diagnose and fix my recurring Dpf issues. Explained everything at fault and remedies, as well as having a chat despite it being late. What a nice guy he was, more than happy with the service DPF Fixers provide.
Vehicles we clean, and where we travel around Cargo
Whatever it is — car, van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, agricultural machine — the same on-site service holds, and the filter never leaves it.
The same run that puts technicians on Edenside most weeks takes in Cargo, Harker, Kingmoor House and the villages beyond Grinsdale. Farther out across Cumbria is nonetheless worth phoning about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the calendar rather than the distance that picks between today and tomorrow.

Questions Cargo drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run sort it?
- Sometimes, if you catch it in time and the vehicle has not fallen into limp mode. That means motorway speed for a long spell, rather than a short trip to Asda.
- The visit takes how long?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — severely blocked filters sometimes need a second pass, which extends it.
- How much does it come to around Cargo?
- The call-out charge takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; cleaning itself begins from £299. Settling it is done by phone, since what you run and where you are both shift the figure.
- Do I have to be present?
- The car wants a spot for two hours or so. You need not be in it. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a monitored drive instead.
- Travelling to Cargo — how soon?
- Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the CA area has open.
- Is the filter lifted off the car?
- It is done where it stands, on the on-site service. We do not take filters off or bolt them back on, whichever way.
- What if the light returns?
- Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Cargo.
