Mobile DPF Cleaning covering Calton, City of Edinburgh
With call-out DPF cleaning, we drive out to the vehicle. A fitter turns up at your place in Calton, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
Nobody sets off until the price is fixed by the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.
Most drivers find us with the light on already, and the car down on power. That is the position this page is meant for.
The DPF light is on. What next?
It might not be the filter whatsoever. That is the main thing. Plenty of faults put the same light on the very same dashboard, which is why a visit starts with a diagnostic rather than with a clean.
The driving you do in the meantime tells. That is the next thing.
- Vehicle even now driving normally on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing and often clears the filter without help.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
Signs the vehicle has been giving you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been building for some time:
- power dropping away, above all climbing uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they always went
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- stop/start silently giving up
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
By itself, none of that is conclusive. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Calton, and the why
For a DPF, the poorest motoring is the kind you get in a residential suburb such as Calton. Think about an ordinary week: the local primary school and back, Abbey Mount at a halt before nine, a five-minute run to Scotmid, a hop to Edinburgh Waverley. None of it there lasts long enough or runs hot enough to finish a regeneration. The soot load banks up rather than burning off.
The map does not help either. The M8 is under 10 miles from Calton and Edinburgh is under a mile away, so unless something carries you out that way often, whole weeks pass without the long steady run that could empty the filter by itself.
The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer run
Limp mode is the motor defending itself. With power limited and the revs kept low, the regeneration the filter wants cannot happen at all. That tells, because triggering one is just what a sustained run does.
Getting it up the motorway is the usual advice, and it works as far as a line. The far side of that point — limp mode — road work will not manage it, and the filter requires treatment.
The car stays in place for on-site DPF cleaning across Calton
The filter does not come off. That is the bit most people do not expect: the job happens with the DPF yet fixed to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, any place the car can sit for a while.
A scan goes first — real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by mass, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected parts, so other faults are ruled out before any of it is touched.
Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are lifted after that, by a cleaning solution put through the access port on that car, which opens out inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to need doing twice.
What the clean has loosened is then driven off by a regeneration. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Calton; if not, in place where the car waits, with the real-time data checked once done.
A second scan confirms the change, resets the warning light and logs anything still open. Both reports are emailed, so you keep the before and after figures recorded.
Where cleaning is not the fix
One thing is what cleaning cures — a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does little for:
- temperature or pressure sensors showing a restriction that is not there
- EGR valves that hang open
- a problem in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting in the first place
- the turbo passing oil into the filter
That is what the first check is for. You are let know before the work starts, not after you have paid, where it turns out to be one of those.
Cutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people type in, though nothing is swapped — your own filter is treated in place and sent back into use. Two more worth knowing.
DPF cleaning charges in Calton
Each visit attracts a call-out charge — travelling to you, setting up the booking, carrying out the diagnostic and offering the advice. The clean itself starts from £299.
Quoting a flat rate would not be honest. We agree it over phone, once the vehicle and its expected needs are known. Where you are matters as much as what you run: Calton itself, Canongate next door, or otherwise out within the EH postcode area.
You are not charged for a clean that the diagnostic says will not help. The call-out charge even so stands, because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have been done.
A 30-day warranty takes in aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Calton if the light comes back inside the time.
Dave arrived on time very professional and fixed the problem so back on road and gave me advice to keep it clean. Many thanks. Jonathan.

Where we travel near Calton, and what we clean
Private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery, agricultural machinery — the one call-out service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is done in place rather than carried anywhere.
Our engineers are along Abbey Mount week in week out, so Calton is hardly ever a detour, and the same run covers Canongate, Sunnybank and the places out past Danderhall. Coverage runs UK-wide, so farther out around City of Edinburgh is nonetheless worth a phone call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Questions Calton drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I just take it for a long drive?
- If you spot it early, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. That means motorway speed for a steady spell, rather than a brief trip to Scotmid.
- The visit runs how long?
- Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean lengthening that where the filter is severely blocked.
- Around Calton, what does it cost?
- The call-out charge takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; the clean itself begins from £299. We quote on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the number.
- Have I got to be around?
- You need not stand with it — the car simply needs a spot to sit for a couple of hours. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would sooner ride along.
- Travelling to Calton — how soon?
- You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the diary. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the EH area has available.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- It is treated where it stands, on the mobile service. That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
- Suppose the light returns?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Calton.
