- Amber light, motor still driving as normal — a long even run can even now clear it on its own. Costs nothing, and worth a try before you ring anything.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has closed.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
The motor has been telling you already
By the time the light shows, things have normally been slipping for a while. It is last news:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- the revs no longer rise the way they once did
- the fuel economy is worse
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
On its own, none of that is conclusive. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
