The motor has been warning you already
By the time the light appears, things have generally been slipping for some time. It is late news:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they always went
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
By itself, none of that is proof. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
