Symptoms have usually been building for some time before the light so much as shows. Belated news, in other words:
- power dropping away, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
- the fuel economy is poorer
- the stop/start silently giving up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in the car
None of that is proof by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
