Before the light, what the car was warning you
Symptoms have generally been mounting for a while before the light even arrives. Belated news, in other words:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they used to go
- fuel consumption going worse
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
By itself, none of that is proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.

Being a village, Bridgefoot produces exactly the use a DPF handles the poorest. Two things more worth knowing. Having the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
