What to check when the DPF light comes on
It could not be the filter at all. That is the first thing. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A diagnostic is — a number of faults show up as the same light.
How the motor is run in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Amber light, motor still driving fine — a long constant run can still shift it alone. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you call anything.
- Car already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not reach it now.
- Stop planning long drives and get it checked if the cabin stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
Before the light, what the motor was telling you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been slipping for some time. It is belated news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- the fuel consumption is worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
On its own, none of that is conclusive. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.

Two things more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
