The DPF is not automatically what is at fault, and that goes first. That light can follow several faults, not merely one, so the visit begins with a check and not with treatment.

Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light even arrives. Last news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- revs that will not climb the way they once did
- the fuel economy is down
- stop/start silently packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
