Bolam, Northumberland: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The motor remains put — call-out DPF cleaning comes to it. The technician pulls up at your door across Bolam and starts. The diesel particulate filter is treated on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you end up with the filter you arrived with.
Reckon on the visit running typically around 2 hours. The clean starts from £299, settled on the phone before anyone sets off.
The light is showing and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we normally find people, and roughly what this page is about.
DPF light on? What to do
Not the unit, automatically. First thing to note. Several faults put the identical light on the same panel, which is why a visit begins with a scan rather than with treatment.
How the vehicle is handled in the meantime counts too.
- Worth a go before you call anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one constant run, no charge.
- Vehicle already dropped into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not touch it now.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.
The motor has been telling you already
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually build for some time before it appears:
- less power, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- the fuel use is poorer
- stop/start silently bowing out
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
On its own, none of that is conclusive. The light beside them suggests a loaded filter.
Why diesel particulate filters choke near Bolam
Bolam is a rural hamlet, and the driving that goes with one is the least kind kind for a DPF. Run through an ordinary week: Belsay Primary School and home again, Low Angerton Bridge at a halt before the hour, a short hop to Co-op Food, a dash to Morpeth. None of it there goes on long enough or gets hot enough to see through a regeneration. What should burn away remains.
Unless you have a regular reason to drive out to the A167(M), under 15 miles from Bolam, or across to Newcastle upon Tyne under 15 miles away, whole weeks pass without a long steady stint. Geography is against you.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode kills it
Limp mode is the car defending itself. With pulling power capped and the revs held, the regeneration the filter requires can never run at all. That tells, because triggering one is exactly what a long run does.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it stands as far as a point. The filter wants treatment rather than driving once the car has gone into limp mode.
Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is cleaned round Bolam
Most owners do not anticipate this part: the filter remains. The job is done with the DPF still fitted to the motor — on your drive, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can stand for a while.
The ECU is taken first, showing soot load by percent and by actual weight, along with a check of sensors, glow plugs and related parts, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never shift are loosened next, by a cleaning solution fed through the access port on that motor, which expands inside the filter. Where the filter is severely blocked, expect a second pass.
What the clean has lifted is then cleared by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of Bolam if you are present, or a static regeneration where the motor stands, with the real-time data checked once done.
Then a second scan, verifying the change, resetting the warning light and noting anything still logged. Both sets of figures are emailed, so the before and after figures are on record.
The failures a DPF clean cannot cure
A filter choked with soot and ash is the one thing a clean fixes. It will not help:
- the wrong figure from a temperature sensor
- EGR valves that stick open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration running in the first place
- oil passing through the filter from a worn turbo
Which is why the scan comes first. You are told before the work begins, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.
Two more worth noting. Having the filter hollowed out is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
The figure of DPF cleaning around Bolam
A call-out charge applies whatever happens, and covers the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice offered. Treatment itself starts from £299.
The number is fixed by the phone, once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be straight. Where you are tells as much as what you drive: Bolam itself, Harnham nearby, or farther out within the NE postcode area.
A clean that will not help is not a clean you pay for, and the check is what says so. Because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge nonetheless stands.
The clean comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Bolam if the light reappears inside that window.
Fantastic service!!!!! Rung them and they came out the next day! Guy was fantastic and was only there just over an hour. would highly recommend.
Ashley came out to my address to clean my dpf filter, he was polite and courteous all the time.
Excellent service from mobile DPF cleaner. Booked around lunchtime, then a same day service, albeit quite late in the evening by the time the mechanic arrived! However, he got the job done, and advised me of what else was needed to ensure that I didn't have any recurrence.
Vehicles we clean, and where we reach round Bolam
Whatever it is — estate, light van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the very same on-site service stands, and the filter never quits it.
The same round that keeps engineers on Low Angerton Bridge most weeks covers Bolam, Harnham, Meldon and the villages beyond Whalton. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so farther out across Northumberland is still worth a ring, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

Things Bolam drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive clear it?
- If you catch it early, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. A steady run at motorway speed is what it takes — not ten minutes to Co-op Food and back.
- How long does the visit take?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely clogged filter can take cleaning twice, which takes longer.
- In Bolam, what does it run to?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the scan and the advice; cleaning itself begins from £299. The vehicle and your address both move the figure, so we price on the phone.
- Do I have to be present?
- You do not need to stand with it — the vehicle just wants somewhere to stand for a couple of hours. Preferring to be there is welcome: the regeneration then runs out on the move, monitored.
- Getting to Bolam — how soon?
- That comes down to the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is free across the NE area.
- Does the filter leave the vehicle?
- It is cleaned where it stands, on the call-out service. We never take filters off or fit them back on, whichever way.
- And if the light comes back?
- Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Bolam.
