What the car has been telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- power tailing off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- fuel economy turning worse
- stop/start silently packing in
- the car stinking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
None of that is conclusive on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is swapped: the filter you have is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it gutted a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth noting.
