By the time the light appears, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is belated news:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is showing too.
