Blowinghouse, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning

On-site DPF cleaning travels to the vehicle. No garage, no filter leaving. A technician travels to your address across Blowinghouse, treats the diesel particulate filter where it is, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you arrived with.

Nobody leaves until the figure is settled on the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

Written for the situation most owners are in: the light already on, the motor starved for power, and the job still to arrange.

The DPF light is on. What next?

The filter is not always what is at fault, and that leads. A number of faults put the very same light on the same dashboard, which is why a visit starts with a check rather than with treatment.

How the motor is handled in the meantime counts too.

  • Car yet driving as normal on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly clears the filter without help.
  • Motor already fallen into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not reach it now.
  • A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the moment to stop arranging long drives and call.

What the motor has been telling you

By the time the light shows, things have usually been slipping for some time. It is belated news:

  • less power, above all climbing uphill
  • the revs no longer climb the way they always did
  • fuel economy going worse
  • silently, the stop/start bows out
  • a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration

Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.

Why diesel particulate filters block near Blowinghouse

For a DPF, the worst use is the kind you meet across a residential suburb such as Blowinghouse. The school run to Treloweth Community Primary School, Barncoose Terrace at a crawl at the morning rush, ten minutes to Co-op Food, the dash to Redruth — not one bit of it goes on long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. The soot collects rather than burning off.

Where you sit does not assist either. The M5 is over 50 miles from Blowinghouse and Truro is under 10 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way routinely, whole weeks go by without the long unbroken run that would clear the filter on its own.

The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer run

The vehicle is protecting itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. The whole problem is that a proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.

The common advice — take it up the motorway — is sound, until it is not. The filter requires cleaning rather than road work once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.

On-site DPF cleaning where the car stands round Blowinghouse

On your driveway, in a work car park, any place the motor can wait for a couple of hours: the job happens with the filter even now fixed on, which is the detail most owners do not expect.

The ECU is interrogated first, giving soot load by proportion and by weight, along with a review of sensors, glow plugs and related parts, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.

Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never move are loosened next, by a cleaning solution put through the access point on that car, which expands inside the filter. A second pass is sometimes required on severely loaded filters.

A regeneration comes next, burning off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Blowinghouse; if not, on the spot where the vehicle sits, with the real-time data verified afterwards.

A second check verifies the change, clears the warning light and lists anything still showing. Both reports are emailed over, so you end up with the before and after figures recorded.

What a DPF clean will not cure

A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning fixes. It will not touch:

  • sensors, temperature or pressure, showing a block that is not real
  • EGR valves that jam open
  • an AdBlue system failure
  • injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration completing whatsoever
  • turbo failure, with oil entering the filter

Finding that out is the first diagnostic's whole job. You are told before the work begins, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.

A couple more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is treated in place and returned into use.

What DPF cleaning runs to across Blowinghouse

The treatment begins from £299. A call-out charge covers every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that comes with it.

Once we know what you drive, and about what the filter will want, the figure gets fixed on the phone. A single price for everyone would not be straight. Two things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Blowinghouse itself, out at Tolskithy, or farther out within the TR postcode area.

Where the scan says treatment will not work, you are not billed for cleaning. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have been done, the call-out charge nonetheless applies.

The work carries a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to Blowinghouse if the light returns inside that period.

The two who came to fix my car were absolutely wonderful. They did a first class job were friendly and spoke to about what they were going to do. First class.

Steve H.

Liam did a great job and I was very happy with the level of service and professionalism. Thanks for being so flexible in your times to fix the dpf.

Oliver A.

Logan came out and talked me through everything. He ran a thorough check and concluded that I didn't need a clean, explained everything and then spent time with me talking me through what to do. Could have easily done an unnecessary clean and charged me. Mind at ease.

Kris S.

What we clean, and how far we travel around Blowinghouse

The filter is cleaned in place on all of them: cars, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.

The same run that has our engineers on Barncoose Terrace most weeks takes in Blowinghouse, Tolskithy, Tolgus Mount and the spots beyond Carn Brea Village. Farther out around Cornwall is nonetheless worth phoning about — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between this day and the next.

Questions Blowinghouse drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run shift it?
If you get it early, and the vehicle is not in limp mode, sometimes. A steady run at motorway speed is what it needs — not five minutes flat to Co-op Food and back.
About how long does it take?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely blocked filter can need cleaning twice, which runs on.
What does it come to across Blowinghouse?
The call-out charge covers the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; treatment itself opens from £299. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both shift the number.
Do I have to be around?
You need not stand with it — the car simply requires space to wait for a couple of hours. Choosing to be there is fine: the regeneration then is done out on the move, monitored.
Can someone get to Blowinghouse soon?
You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the calendar. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is available across the TR area.
The filter — does it come away from the car?
Treated where it is, on this service, so no. Lifting a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything a job we do in either direction.
Suppose the light returns?
An engineer heads back out to Blowinghouse — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
