Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
Symptoms have usually been growing for weeks before the light even shows. Belated news, in other words:
- tailing off on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
By itself, none of that is evidence. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.
What blocks diesel particulate filters around Bermuda
Being a village, Bermuda produces exactly the use a DPF copes with least well. None of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to All Saints CofE Primary School and Nursery, Nuneaton, Griff Roundabout barely moving at the morning rush, ten minutes to Tesco Extra, the run to Bermuda Park. Then the cleaning. A cleaning solution goes in through the access point on that vehicle and spreads inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. A second pass is sometimes required on badly clogged filters.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted will fail its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your existing filter is cleared in place and goes back into service.
