Your DPF light is lit — what next?
First thing: it is not necessarily the filter. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A scan is — plenty of faults register as the same warning.
It matters what you do with the vehicle between now and the appointment.
- Worth a try before you call anything: amber light, car driving normally, just one constant run, no cost.
- Once the vehicle is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has gone.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it looked at.
What the motor has been showing you
Symptoms have usually been building for a while before the light so much as arrives. Late news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- you see the revs stop short of where they always went
- economy that is worse than it was
- stop/start without a word giving up
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters choke around Bedale
Bedale is a riverside town, and the motoring that comes with one is the poorest kind for a DPF.
