- Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has gone.
- Get it checked rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
The car has been showing you already
The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been mounting for a while:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- worse fuel economy
- silently, the stop/start gives up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
On its own, none of that is evidence. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is exchanged: the filter you already own is treated where it sits and put back to work. Nor is having it gutted a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth knowing.
