What the motor has been showing you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:
- power falling off, especially going uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they used to
- fuel use going worse
- silently, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
Blocked diesel particulate filters around Balvraid, and the reason
Being a coastal area, Balvraid throws up exactly the motoring a DPF copes with worst. A couple more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your original filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.
