First thing: it is not always the DPF. A check happens before any work, because that same dashboard light has several possible faults behind it.

- Motor even now driving as normal on an amber light — attempt a long constant run first. It costs zero and often clears the filter without assistance.
- Vehicle already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not touch it now.
- Stop booking long drives and get it seen to if the cabin stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.
The motor has been showing you already
By the time the light shows, things have generally been slipping for a while. It is late news:
- power falling off, especially pulling uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they always went
- economy that is worse than it was
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
That is not evidence on its own. The light alongside them indicates a blocked filter.
