The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for weeks:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer rise the way they once did
- the fuel consumption is down
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box
On its own, none of that is evidence. The light with them indicates a full filter.
Why diesel particulate filters block near Avisford
