Ashwell, Rutland: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the vehicle. Your car isn't taken off and the filter will not leave it. A technician comes at your address over in Ashwell, treats the diesel particulate filter fitted to the car and performs a DPF regeneration.

The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is fixed by the phone before anyone travels.

The light is already on and the car is down on power — that is how we usually find people, and roughly what this page is about.

Your DPF light is on — what then?

It may not be the filter in the end. That is the main thing. A number of faults put the identical light on the identical dash, which is why a visit begins with a check rather than with a clean.

How the motor is run in the meantime matters too.

  • Motor yet driving normally on an amber light — attempt a long steady run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly clears the filter without a visit.
  • A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
  • A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under the throttle, is the moment to stop planning long drives and book it in.

Before the light, what the car was showing you

By the time the light appears, things have normally been deteriorating for a while. It is last news:

  • going uphill, the power tails off
  • the revs no longer rise the way they used to
  • fuel use turning worse
  • the stop/start quietly packing in
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there

On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is there too.

What clogs diesel particulate filters round Ashwell

For a DPF, the worst driving is the sort you get in a rural village such as Ashwell. Run through a typical week: Langham CofE (Controlled) Primary School and home again, Oakham Road at a crawl before nine, a five-minute run to Aldi, a run to Oakham. Not much there goes on long enough or is hot enough to see through a regeneration. The soot load builds up rather than burning away.

Unless you have a routine need to head out to the Great North Road, under 25 miles from Ashwell, or over to Leicester under 25 miles away, whole weeks slip past without a long unbroken drive. Geography is against you.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops

It is self-protection: that is all limp mode is. The whole problem is that a long drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not climb and power is limited.

So the usual advice to take it up the motorway is good advice, until it is not. Beyond that stage — limp mode — more driving will not be enough, and the filter needs a clean.

DPF cleaning at the car in Ashwell

The filter does not leave it. That is the bit most owners do not expect: the job is done with the DPF even now bolted to the vehicle, on your driveway, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can wait for a couple of hours.

A scan comes first — real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by actual weight, and a review of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so other faults are ruled out before any of it is started.

A solution next goes in through the access port on that car, expanding inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. Where the filter is heavily loaded, plan on a second pass.

Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean freed. That is a monitored drive out of Ashwell if you are along, or a static regeneration where the vehicle waits, with the running data read after.

Both read-outs come through by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second check is what proves the change, clears the light and logs whatever is still outstanding.

The problems a DPF clean cannot fix

Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:

  • sensors, temperature or pressure, reporting a blockage that is not real
  • the EGR valve stuck open
  • an AdBlue system fault
  • a regeneration that hardly ever completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter

The first check is there for exactly that. Transpiring to be one of them means learning it before any work starts, not after handing over anything.

Two more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.

DPF cleaning charges around Ashwell

A call-out charge applies whatever happens, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice offered. The clean itself opens from £299.

Quoting a flat rate would not be truthful. We agree it over phone, once the car and its likely needs are clear. Two separate things change it: what you run, and where you are — Ashwell itself, across at Barrow, or otherwise out across the LE postcode area.

Where the check says treatment will not help, you are not asked to pay for treatment. What still applies is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the scan was carried out and the advice was given.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer heads back to Ashwell.

Vehicles we clean, and where we get to near Ashwell

The one call-out service takes in private cars, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is done on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.

Engineers are along Oakham Road most weeks, so Ashwell is rarely a special trip, and the same run covers Barrow, Cottesmore and the villages out past Langham. Further out through Rutland is still worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between one day and the next.

Things Ashwell drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive sort it?
If you catch it in time, and the vehicle is not in limp mode, sometimes. It takes a sustained run at motorway speed, not fifteen minutes flat to Aldi and back.
Roughly how long does it run?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily loaded filter can take a second clean, which lengthens that.
Cost across Ashwell — what is it?
Cleaning starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. The vehicle and your address both change the number, so we price on the phone.
Have I got to be around?
No. The vehicle requires somewhere to wait for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be done as a watched drive instead.
How soon can someone travel to Ashwell?
You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the diary. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will know what the LE area has free.
Is the filter lifted off the vehicle?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is done in place. Lifting a filter off or putting one back on count as anything work we do in either direction.
And if the light comes back?
Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Ashwell.
