Ashmill, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The car sits put — call-out DPF cleaning goes to it. A fitter arrives at your door in Ashmill, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you came with.
Nobody travels until the figure is fixed over the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
The light is already on and the vehicle is low on power — that is how we usually come across people, and precisely what this page covers.
What to do when the DPF light is on
It could not be the DPF at all. That is the opening thing. That light can come from plenty of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a check and not with cleaning.
The driving you do in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.
- Car yet driving normally on an amber light — attempt a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly clears the filter without help.
- Motor already dropped into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not reach it now.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it looked at.
Signs the vehicle has been giving you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is last news:
- dropping away on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
That is not evidence by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Ashmill, and the cause
Ashmill is a rural hamlet, and the driving that goes with one is the poorest kind for a DPF. Think about a normal week: Ashwater Primary School and home, Dots Close at a standstill before nine, a short hop to Waitrose, a hop to the nearest station. Nothing there lasts long enough or is hot enough to see through a regeneration. The soot that should clear banks up instead.
Except when you have a regular need to drive out to the M5, under 50 miles from Ashmill, or across to Plymouth under 50 miles away, entire weeks go by without a long steady run. Geography is unhelpful.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
The vehicle is looking after itself, which is what limp mode is. The whole catch is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is capped.
So the common advice to get it up the motorway is sensible advice, up until the day it is not. Once the car is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter requires cleaning rather than road work.
Mobile DPF cleaning where the car stands round Ashmill
Nothing leaves the motor. That surprises people. The DPF remains bolted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for two hours or so.
A scan happens first — real-time data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated parts, so other faults are cleared before a thing is started.
Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never shift are freed after that, by a cleaning solution passed through the entry point on that motor, which opens out inside the filter. A second pass is sometimes required on badly blocked filters.
Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean lifted. That is a monitored drive out of Ashmill if you are present, or a static regeneration where the vehicle sits, with the live data verified once done.
A second check proves the change, resets the warning light and notes anything still open. Both read-outs are emailed, so you keep the before and after figures on record.
The faults a DPF clean cannot cure
A clean fixes one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a restriction that is not there
- EGR valves that hang open
- AdBlue system problems
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever runs
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
That is what the first scan is for. Where it turns out to be one of those, you are warned before any work gets going rather than after you have paid anything.
Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a working DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the wording people type in, though nothing is exchanged — your existing filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth knowing.
DPF cleaning charges around Ashmill
Every visit carries a call-out charge — coming out to you, taking the booking, doing the scan and giving the advice. The clean itself opens from £299.
No single flat rate would be straight, so the figure is agreed over the phone once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. A pair of things change it: what you drive, and where you are — Ashmill itself, out at Bradaford, or otherwise out in the EX postcode area.
Where the scan says cleaning will not work, you are not asked to pay for a clean. The call-out charge even so holds, because the visit, the check and the advice have been done.
The work comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to Ashmill if the light reappears inside that time.
Really pleased with service. They communicated exceptionally well & Dave really pulled out all the stops to keep me on the road Explaining everything he did Will definitely recommend to anyone who is in the same situation. Thank you.
Liam was very professional and a very nice man. He explained everything in great detail. I would definitely recommend using DPF fixer if you have a problem with your vehicles DPF.
First visit the job was not complete they had found a fault on the Turbo Actuator. 2nd visit they completed the clean all good all warning light off. Brilliant home service.
The vehicles we clean and the patch we take in around Ashmill
The filter is done where it sits on all of them: cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery, agricultural vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.
Our engineers are along Dots Close week in week out, so Ashmill is rarely a journey of its own, and the same run picks up Bradaford, Beckett and the spots out past Ashwater. Farther out across Devon is nonetheless worth ringing about — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that settles between today and tomorrow.

Questions Ashmill drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- Sometimes, if you spot it in time and the motor has not dropped into limp mode. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it takes — not five minutes or so to Waitrose and back.
- Does the visit run long?
- Count on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean adding to that where the filter is badly blocked.
- Cost in Ashmill — what is it?
- Treatment opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the scan and the advice. The vehicle and your address both shift the number, so we settle it on the phone.
- Have I got to be around?
- The car requires a spot for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then goes out on the open road, monitored.
- How soon can someone come to Ashmill?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is already in the calendar. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is open across the EX area.
- Will the filter be taken off?
- Treated where it is, on this service, so no. Neither getting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- What if the light returns?
- Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Ashmill.
