By the time the light shows, things have generally been going wrong for some time. It is late news:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they used to
- fuel use turning worse
- stop/start without a word giving up
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is conclusive on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke around Arnage
Arnage is a rural hamlet, and the motoring that goes with one is the least kind type for a DPF. The school run to the local primary school, B9030 at a halt at half eight, a few minutes to Tesco, the run to the nearest station — nothing of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration.
