Before the light, what the motor was telling you
Last news, the light. The symptoms generally build for some time before it shows:
- climbing uphill, the power falls off
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
- the fuel economy is down
- a stop/start that has quietly bowed out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
None of that is proof alone. The light alongside them indicates a loaded filter.

A couple more worth noting. Having the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.
