What to check when the DPF light comes on
The filter is not automatically what is to blame, and that leads. Cleaning is not where a visit begins. A scan is — a number of faults show up as the same warning.
It tells what you manage with the motor between now and the appointment.
- A long constant run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle goes normally. Costs nothing, so try that before calling.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not touch it now.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under the throttle, is the point to stop arranging long drives and book it in.
What the vehicle has been showing you
By the time the light appears, things have normally been slipping for weeks. It is late news:
- less power, particularly going uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they always went
- fuel consumption turning worse
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
That is not evidence alone. The light alongside them points at a full filter.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Alt

- EGR valves that hang open
- an AdBlue system problem

- turbo trouble, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the diagnostic happens first. If one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it in advance rather than once the money has gone already.
DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you own is cleaned where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it gutted a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth bearing in mind.
