Before the light, what the motor was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been building for some time:
- climbing uphill, the power drops away
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- worse fuel economy
- stop/start quietly packing in
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
None of that is conclusive on its own. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is showing too.
