Symptoms have generally been growing for some time before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- the fuel economy is worse
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.

For a DPF, the least kind driving is the kind you get across a rural hamlet such as Acton Green.
