What the car has been showing you
Symptoms have normally been growing for a while before the light so much as shows. Belated news, in other words:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they once did
- fuel consumption going worse
- stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
