# Y Wig, Powys: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF takes place at the car, not at a workshop.

The fitter arrives at your place across Y Wig and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned on the motor, a DPF regeneration runs after it, and you hold on to the filter you started with.

Nobody travels until the figure is settled by the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.

The light is already on and the motor is down on power — that is how we generally meet people, and roughly what this page deals with.

## The DPF light is on. What then?

It might not be the filter at all. That is the main thing.

Plenty of faults put the very same light on the very same dash, which is why a visit opens with a diagnostic rather than with treatment.

It tells what you manage with the car between now and the booking.

- Vehicle yet driving fine on an amber light — try a long constant run first. It costs zero and regularly shifts the filter without a visit.

- Motor already fallen into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not touch it now.

- Get it checked rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on the throttle, has gone beyond the long-run stage.

## Before the light, what the car was warning you

Symptoms have normally been mounting for some time before the light even arrives. Belated news, in other words:

- less power, especially pulling uphill

- an engine whose revs will not climb as before

- consumption that is worse than it was

- the stop/start without a word packing in

- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell inside

Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive.

It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.

## What chokes diesel particulate filters round Y Wig

For a DPF, the worst motoring is the kind you meet around a rural hamlet such as Y Wig.

A regeneration wants the time and heat, and has neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on B4382 at half eight, not on ten minutes to the local shops, and not on the run to Welshpool.

Instead of clearing, the unburnt soot banks up.

Neither is distant from Y Wig: under 50 miles to the M54, under 50 miles to Wrexham. Neither is on the way to anything most weeks, though, so the journey that would scour a filter simply never gets made.

## DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode kills it

Limp mode is the vehicle protecting itself.

The real difficulty is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is held down.

So the standard advice to take it up the motorway is sensible advice, up until the day it is not.

In limp mode you are the far side of that line: cleaning is what will do it, not more driving.

## Where the motor stands is where the DPF is done in Y Wig

Nothing leaves the vehicle. That catches out people. The DPF sits fixed where it is and the work is done around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a couple of hours.

Nothing is started until other faults are eliminated. That means a scan first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and associated components.

A cleaning fluid next is injected through the access port on that car, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never move.

Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to require doing twice.

What the clean has loosened is then burned off by a regeneration.

That is a monitored drive out of Y Wig if you are present, or a static regeneration where the motor sits, with the running data verified once done.

Then a second check, verifying the change, resetting the warning light and noting anything still showing. Both read-outs are emailed, so the before and after figures are on record.

## When a DPF clean is not the fix

Cleaning cures one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:

- sensors, pressure or temperature, reporting a restriction that is not real

- EGR valves that hang open

- a fault in the AdBlue system

- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration completing in the first place

- the turbo putting oil into the filter

Finding that out is the first diagnostic's job.

Where it turns out to be one of those, you are let know before any work gets going rather than after you have handed over for it.

A couple more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use.

## What DPF cleaning comes to across Y Wig

The clean starts from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that comes with it.

The figure is agreed by the phone, once we have the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be honest.

The motor moves it, and so does the location — Y Wig, Dolanog, or somewhere further out in the SY postcode area.

Where the scan says cleaning will not help, you are not billed for treatment.

What nonetheless applies is the call-out charge, since the visit was made, the scan was done and the advice was given.

Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer returns to Y Wig.

## Vehicles we clean, and where we reach around Y Wig

Cars, vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery, agricultural machinery — the one mobile service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is done where it sits rather than taken anywhere.

Y Wig is rarely a special trip: technicians are out on B4382 week in week out, and the same run covers Dolanog, Pontrobert and the places out past Llanerfyl.

It is the schedule, not the distance, that decides whether it is one day or the next, and coverage runs UK-wide — so phone still from farther out around Powys.

## A note on Y Wig

Y Wig is a small hamlet in Powys, situated inland at an elevation of around 160 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Y Wig is located approximately 28 miles from Wrexham, the nearest city, and is around 160 miles from London. Y Wig has a population of around 242 people.

## Questions Y Wig drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run shift it?

It can, provided you spot it in time and limp mode has not set in.

That requires motorway speed for a long run, rather than a quick trip to the local shops.

The visit takes how long?

That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly clogged filter can need cleaning twice, which runs on.

Across Y Wig, what does it run to?

Cleaning opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top covers the visit, the diagnostic and the advice.

Pricing is done by phone, since what you run and where you sit both move the figure.

Is it needed for me to be around?

A spot for the motor to stand, for a couple of hours, is all that is wanted. Not you.

Wanting to be there is fine: the regeneration then goes out on the move, monitored.

When can someone get to Y Wig?

It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the diary.

Ring 0303 330 1830 what is open across the SY area.

The filter — does it come off the motor?

Not on the mobile service — it is cleaned where it sits.

Neither job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.

What if the light returns?

The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer heading back to Y Wig.
