# The Inch, City of Edinburgh: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF is done at the vehicle, not at a garage.

An engineer turns up at your place in The Inch, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the motor, runs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you came with.

Allow for the visit running typically around 2 hours. The clean starts from £299, fixed on the phone before anyone sets off.

If the light is showing and the car is down on power, this page is the right one. That is how most people end up here.

## DPF light on? What happens next

It may not be the DPF at all. That is the first thing.

A number of faults put the identical light on the very same dash, which is why a visit starts with a scan rather than with a clean.

It tells what you get with the vehicle between now and the visit.

- Worth a try before you call anything: amber light, car driving as normal, just one steady run, no cost.

- That window has closed once the car has fallen into limp mode. Driving will not help now.

- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it seen to.

## What the vehicle has been telling you

Late news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for some time before it appears:

- less power, especially pulling uphill

- the revs no longer pull the way they always did

- economy that is worse than it was

- the stop/start without a word packing in

- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there

Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive.

With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.

## Choked diesel particulate filters round The Inch, and the reason

For a DPF, the worst use is the sort you get across a residential suburb such as The Inch.

The school run to the local primary school, Craigend Park at a crawl at half eight, a few minutes to Aldi, the hop to Newcraighall — nothing of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration.

Instead of burning off, the soot load banks up.

The map does not oblige either. The M8 is under 10 miles from The Inch and Edinburgh is under 3 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way regularly, entire weeks slip past without the long steady run that might empty the filter alone.

## The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer run

Limp mode is the vehicle looking after itself.

A proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode prevents: power capped, revs pinned, no regeneration on offer.

The standard advice — take it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not.

In limp mode you are the far side of that point: a clean is what will work, not more road work.

## The vehicle stays where it is for on-site DPF cleaning round The Inch

On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the car can wait for a while: the job is done with the filter still fitted on, which is the part most drivers do not expect.

A check happens first — running data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by mass, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected components, so other faults are eliminated before any of it is touched.

Then the treatment. A cleaning solution goes in through the access point on that car and spreads inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move.

A second pass is sometimes required on badly blocked filters.

Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has freed.

That is a monitored drive out of The Inch if you are present, or a static regeneration where the vehicle waits, with the live data verified afterwards.

Finally the scan runs again — the change confirmed, the light reset, anything still outstanding logged. Both read-outs reach you by email, so the numbers are on record.

## What a DPF clean will not touch

One thing is what treatment answers — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:

- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a block that is not there

- EGR valves that stick open

- AdBlue system faults

- worn glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever starts

- a turbo pushing oil through the filter

Which is why the diagnostic happens first.

When it turns out to be one of those, you are let know before any work begins rather than after you have settled up anything.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is cleaned where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it cut out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth noting.

## The figure for DPF cleaning across The Inch

A call-out charge stands whatever follows, and pays for the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice given. Treatment itself starts from £299.

Publishing a flat rate would not be truthful. We agree it by phone, once the car and its likely needs are known.

Two things move it: what you run, and where you are — The Inch itself, out at Liberton, or farther out across the EH postcode area.

Where the check says cleaning will not help, you are not asked to pay for treatment.

You still pay that charge: someone turned up, did the check and offered you the advice.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer returns to The Inch.

## Vehicles we clean, and where we get to around The Inch

One mobile service spans private cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, construction and plant machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is cleaned where it sits rather than taken anywhere.

The same trip that puts engineers on Craigend Park most weeks takes in The Inch, Liberton, Craigmillar and the places beyond Danderhall.

Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out across City of Edinburgh is still worth a call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

## The Inch itself

The Inch is a suburban area located on the riverside in the City of Edinburgh, sitting at an elevation of 83 metres. The Inch is situated approximately 2.8 miles from Edinburgh city centre and is near other local areas such as Liberton, Moredun, and Nether Liberton. The Inch has a population of around 5575 people and is predominantly composed of flat-type housing. The Inch is part of the larger Edinburgh urban area, which is around 328.8 miles from London.

## Questions The Inch drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I simply take it for a long drive?

Quickly enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes.

Fifteen minutes to Aldi and back will not be enough; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.

Does the visit run long?

Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean extending that where the filter is severely blocked.

In The Inch, what does it cost?

Starting from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the diagnostic and advice on what to do next.

Quoting is done by phone, since what you run and where you are both change the figure.

Do I have to be there?

You need not stand with it — the vehicle simply wants space to wait for a couple of hours.

Ride along if you prefer, and the regeneration becomes a supervised drive.

Can someone come to The Inch soon?

Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is typical.

Call 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is free across the EH area.

Is the filter removed from the vehicle?

Treated where it is, on this service, so no.

Getting a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything something we do either way.

And if the light returns?

Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer heading back to The Inch.
