# New Town, Durham: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we come to the motor.

No workshop, no filter coming off. An engineer drives out to your place across New Town, clears the diesel particulate filter where it is, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you came with.

The visit lasts typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the number is fixed over the phone before anyone travels.

The light is showing and the car is low on power — that is how we usually come across people, and what this page covers.

## The DPF light is on. What then?

It may not be the unit at all. That is the first thing.

A diagnostic goes before any work, because that same dashboard light has a number of likely faults behind it.

It matters what you manage with the car between now and the appointment.

- A long even run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle drives normally. Costs zero, so have a go at that before ringing.

- That window has gone once the motor has dropped into limp mode. Motoring will not help now.

- Get it checked rather than driving it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.

## What the car has been telling you

By the time the light shows, things have normally been deteriorating for weeks. It is belated news:

- pulling uphill, the power tails off

- revs that will not climb the way they once did

- fuel economy turning worse

- stop/start silently bowing out

- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box

None of that is conclusive on its own.

It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.

## What clogs diesel particulate filters near New Town

For a DPF, the least kind driving is the type you meet in a rural hamlet such as New Town.

The school run to Rosa Street Primary and Nursery Academy, Whitworth Road at a standstill at half eight, ten minutes to ALDI, the run to Bishop Auckland — nothing of it goes on long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration.

What should burn off stays put.

Neither is far from New Town: under 5 miles to the A1(M), under 10 miles to Durham. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the drive that would clear a filter never gets made.

## The point a DPF regeneration can no longer run

The vehicle is defending itself, which is what limp mode is.

Pulling power is capped, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter wants can no longer complete — which is the real difficulty, because a long drive works by setting off that regeneration.

The standard advice — run it up the motorway — is sensible, up until it is not.

Beyond that point — limp mode — more driving will not do it, and the filter wants treatment.

## The motor stays in place for on-site DPF cleaning across New Town

On your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can stand for a few hours: the job takes place with the filter still fitted on, which is the part most people do not expect.

Nothing is started until other faults are eliminated. That means a check first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by weight, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and related parts.

Then the clean. A cleaning solution is fed in through the access point on that car and spreads inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift.

Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to take doing twice.

What the clean has freed is then burned off by a regeneration.

That is a monitored drive out of New Town if you are there, or a static regeneration where the motor waits, with the real-time data checked after.

A second check confirms the change, resets the warning light and logs anything still open. Both sets of figures are sent over, so you keep the before and after figures to hand.

## Where treatment is not the answer

Treatment cures one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:

- the wrong figure from a temperature sensor

- a stuck-open EGR valve

- a failure in the AdBlue system

- glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration completing in the first place

- turbo problems, with oil reaching the filter

That is what the first diagnostic is for.

If it proves to be one of those, you are told before any work gets going rather than after you have settled up anything.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted will fail its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no solution. What gets searched for as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your own filter is cleaned in place and goes back into work.

## DPF cleaning charges around New Town

Every visit takes a call-out charge — coming out to you, making the booking, carrying out the diagnostic and passing on the advice. The clean itself opens from £299.

No single flat rate would be honest, so the price is agreed by the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need.

A pair of things move it: what you drive, and where you are — New Town itself, over at Spennymoor, or farther out across the DL postcode area.

You are not asked to pay for treatment that the scan says will not help.

You nonetheless pay that charge: someone came out, carried out the diagnostic and offered you the advice.

The work includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to New Town if the light reappears inside that window.

## Vehicles we clean, and where we reach near New Town

Cars, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — a single on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is cleaned in place rather than taken anywhere.

Most weeks there is by then someone on Whitworth Road, so New Town hardly ever means a detour, and Spennymoor, Page Bank and the spots past Byers Green come with it.

It is the calendar, not the distance, that decides whether it is one day or the next, and coverage runs UK-wide — so phone still from farther out through Durham.

## Questions New Town drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough by itself?

If you get it early enough, and the motor is not in limp mode, sometimes.

A sustained run at motorway speed is what it wants — not ten minutes or so to ALDI and back.

Does the visit last long?

That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly clogged filter can need cleaning twice, which adds time.

Cost in New Town — what is it?

It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice.

Both the vehicle and where you are change it, which is why pricing goes by phone.

Must I be present in person?

You need not stand with it — the car just wants a spot to wait for a couple of hours.

The regeneration can be run as a monitored drive if you would prefer to come along.

When can someone get to New Town?

You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the diary.

Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is open across the DL area.

The filter — does it come off the vehicle?

On the call-out service, no: the filter is cleaned in place.

Lifting a filter off or fitting one back on come to anything a job we do either way.

And if the light returns?

Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to New Town.
