# Liff, Angus: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we drive out to the car.

Your car is not taken anywhere and the filter will not come off. A fitter comes at your address across Liff, treats the diesel particulate filter on the car and carries out a DPF regeneration.

Allow for the visit taking typically around 2 hours. The clean begins from £299, agreed over the phone before anyone sets off.

The light is already on and the motor is low on power — that is how we usually find people, and precisely what this page is about.

## The DPF light is on. What now?

It may not be the filter whatsoever. That is the opening thing.

Several faults put the same light on the very same panel, which is why a visit opens with a check rather than with a clean.

Second thing: how you handle it between now and then counts.

- A long even run may yet do it, provided the light is amber and the motor drives normally. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before calling.

- Car already fallen into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not shift it now.

- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the moment to stop arranging long drives and call.

## What the motor has been showing you

Symptoms have generally been building for some time before the light so much as appears. Late news, in other words:

- pulling uphill, the power drops away

- revs that will not rise the way they once did

- the fuel economy is worse

- stop/start without a word giving up

- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears

Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive.

It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.

## Blocked diesel particulate filters round Liff, and the cause

Liff is a coastal village, and the motoring that belongs to one is the least kind type for a DPF.

Run through a normal week: the local primary school and home, Woodside Road at a crawl before nine, a five-minute run to Asda, a hop to Invergowrie. Not much there lasts long enough or is hot enough to complete a regeneration.

What should clear remains.

The map does not help either. The M90 is under 15 miles from Liff and Dundee is under 5 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way often, weeks go by without the long unbroken run that might clear the filter on its own.

## DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode ends it

Limp mode is the motor defending itself.

With power held down and the revs held, the regeneration the filter wants will not happen at all. That tells, because triggering one is exactly what a long run does.

Good advice, that motorway run — up until the point it is not.

The filter wants cleaning rather than more driving once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.

## Where the motor stands is where the DPF is treated across Liff

Most owners do not see coming this detail: the filter remains. The job is done with the DPF still fitted to the vehicle — on your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the motor can wait for a while.

The ECU is interrogated first, showing soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a review of sensor readings, glow plugs and related parts, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.

Then the clean. A cleaning solution goes in through the access point on that car and expands inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move.

Severely loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.

Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has lifted.

That is a monitored drive out of Liff if you are there, or a static regeneration where the vehicle sits, with the live data checked once done.

Both sets of figures are sent by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second diagnostic is what confirms the change, clears the light and lists whatever is still open.

## Where a clean is not the solution

Treatment cures one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:

- a temperature or pressure sensor reporting a blockage that is not there

- an EGR valve held open

- a problem in the AdBlue system

- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever starts

- oil passing through the filter from a worn turbo

Finding that out is the first diagnostic's purpose.

When one of those proves the fault, you learn of it up front rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.

Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a functioning DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is replaced — your original filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth noting.

## Figures for DPF cleaning around Liff

A call-out charge holds whatever follows, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the scan and the advice given. Cleaning itself begins from £299.

Not one flat rate would be straight, so the number is settled over the phone once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need.

Where you are tells as much as what you run: Liff itself, Mains of Gray next door, or otherwise out across the DD postcode area.

Where the scan says cleaning will not do it, you are not charged for treatment.

You even so pay that charge: someone came out, ran the scan and gave you the advice.

The work includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Liff if the light reappears inside that period.

## What we clean, and how far we travel round Liff

Cars, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — the one call-out service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated in place rather than carried anywhere.

Week in week out there is usually someone on Woodside Road, so Liff hardly ever means a special trip, and Mains of Gray, Denhead of Gray and the places past Fowlis come with it.

Coverage reaches UK-wide, so farther out around Angus is still worth a ring, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

## About Liff

Liff has a population of around 530 people and is characterised by detached housing. Liff sits at an elevation of 99 metres, close to nearby places such as Mains of Gray, Fowlis, and Muirhead. Liff is located approximately 364 miles from London, but its proximity to Dundee makes it a commuter-friendly location.

## Things Liff drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough alone?

It may, provided you spot it early enough and limp mode has not arrived.

A steady run at motorway speed is what it needs — not five minutes or so to Asda and back.

Does the visit take long?

That is typically around 2 hours, though a heavily clogged filter can need cleaning twice, which takes longer.

How much does it cost in Liff?

A clean starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top covers the visit, the scan and the advice.

Both the vehicle and where you are shift it, which is why quoting happens by phone.

Must I be there in person?

You do not need to stand with it — the motor just needs somewhere to wait for a couple of hours.

The regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive if you would sooner be there.

How soon can someone get to Liff?

That hangs on the schedule, but it is often same-day or next-day.

Call 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is available across the DD area.

Is the filter taken off the car?

Done where it stands, on this service, so no.

That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.

And if the light reappears?

The 30-day warranty includes aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Liff.
